After the successful operation of the ELS technology at Creaciones Joviar’s industrial wastewater treatment site in Ibi (Spain), the ELS prototype was moved to Gandia (Spain) for validation in a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) managed by Global Omnium.

Brines received in Gandia WWTP (conductivity: 30-40 mS/cm, pH: 5.3-6.7) were used as electrolyte in the ELS tank with Al-based electrodes to obtain coagulants with a metal concentration of 1000 mgAl/L. Coagulants were applied at different doses in a pilot biological aerated reactor treating primary settled wastewater. The optimal dose was found to be 10 mgAl/L, which led to a removal of 67% P-PO4.

The operation did not proceed without challenges: from blackouts to the cleaning and maintenance of the electrodes. However, the Global Omnium team (pictured above) was able to solve all issues and successfully conclude the implementation and testing of the ELS in Gandia WWTP.
