LIFE Waste2Coag successful case study in an industrial wastewater treatment plant

We have successfully demonstrated the ELS technology in an industrial wastewater treatment plant (WWTP)!

Over the second half of 2024, the ELS technology was installed at project partner Creaciones Joviar (JOVIAR)’s site in Ibi (Spain). After connecting the hydraulic and electrical systems, the ELS was put in operation and optimised by AIDIMME and JOVIAR to produce aluminum-based and iron-based coagulants, by valorising waste products, such as the brines generated by the water demineralisation processes in JOVIAR and scrap metals used as electrodes.

The coagulants generated were dosed in JOVIAR’s WWTP to remove pollutants and compare the removal efficiency with respect to conventional coagulants. The pollutant removal performance and the volume of sludge generated after the coagulation-flocculation process were evaluated as a function of the dosage of these electrolytically generated coagulants.

The transferability of the ELS technology to an industrial WWTP was successfully validated for two types of coagulants (aluminum-based and iron-based). These coagulants eliminated the pollutants in the wastewater, enabling JOVIAR to continue complying with legal discharge limits and avoiding purchasing conventional reagents.
